Hanwha Group is deepening its bet on South Korea's defense and aerospace industry with a fresh 500 billion won ($363 million) investment aimed at lifting its stake in Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to roughly 15%.
The additional purchase makes Hanwha one of the most significant private shareholders in KAI, the country's sole domestic aircraft manufacturer and a central player in flagship programs such as the KF-21 fighter jet, the FA-50 light combat aircraft and a growing portfolio of space projects.
The move fits a broader strategy that has seen Hanwha steadily expand across the defense supply chain. Through units including Hanwha Aerospace, the conglomerate has built out capabilities spanning engines, munitions, guided weapons, naval systems and space launch, positioning itself as the anchor of a consolidating national defense sector.
Analysts see the increased holding as a way for Hanwha to secure closer strategic alignment with KAI at a time when South Korea is chasing record arms exports and seeking greater self-reliance in aircraft and satellite technology. Deeper cooperation between the two could streamline joint bids abroad and sharpen the country's competitiveness against established Western defense giants.
KAI has emerged as a rising force in global markets, winning contracts across Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, while pushing into next-generation platforms including drones and urban air mobility. A larger, stable shareholder such as Hanwha could bolster the manufacturer's long-term investment capacity.
The expanded stake underscores how South Korea's defense landscape is rapidly reshaping around a handful of major groups. As governments worldwide ramp up military spending, Hanwha's latest step signals its intent to remain at the forefront of the nation's aerospace ambitions.
