Hanwha Defense USA has won a significant $269 million contract for shipbuilding with the U.S. Navy.
Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of South Korea's Hanwha Group, has successfully secured a $269 million contract to build a medium landing ship for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. This contract marks a significant milestone as it is the company's first shipbuilding agreement with the U.S. Navy.
The contract was awarded through a competitive bidding process managed by Tote Services, a U.S. maritime firm. Hanwha will construct the vessel at its Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia, with options for additional vessels in the future.
Michael Coulter, President and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA, emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing its workforce and technology since acquiring the shipyard in 2024. Construction is set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2027, with the first vessel expected to be delivered by 2030.
This contract is part of a broader initiative to support the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps' planned fleet of 35 medium landing ships, reflecting the strengthening defense ties between South Korea and the United States. The announcement comes as Hanwha seeks to expand its footprint in the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
