Hanwha Group has announced the production and distribution of 40,000 copies of its 2027 Braille calendar, aimed at supporting visually impaired individuals. This initiative coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Korean Braille system, known as Hunmaengjeongeum, which was developed by Park Du-seong in 1926.
The calendar will feature both Braille and printed text, allowing for accessibility for both visually impaired and sighted users. It includes essential information such as dates, weekdays, lunar dates, seasonal markers, and public holidays. Feedback from visually impaired users has been incorporated to enhance readability through adjustments in text size and contrast.
Since its inception in 2000, Hanwha has distributed approximately 1 million Braille calendars, reflecting its commitment to social responsibility. The initiative began after Chairman Kim Seung-youn received a heartfelt letter from a visually impaired individual, inspiring the company to ensure that everyone can celebrate the new year.
Applications for the 2027 calendar are currently open until November 13, with organizations and institutions able to apply through Hanwha's website. Individuals can request a calendar by calling the designated office. This project not only aids in independence for the visually impaired but also honors a significant milestone in the history of Korean Braille.
