German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to visit South Korea next week for an official summit with President Lee Jae Myung. This visit, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, marks Merz's first trip to South Korea since taking office and the first by a German chancellor in three years.
The summit will follow their previous discussions at the G7 summit in France in June and will be the third meeting between the two leaders. During the talks, they are expected to cover a range of topics including economic cooperation, future industries such as batteries and artificial intelligence, and regional security issues.
Merz's visit highlights the strengthening of bilateral relations, as Germany is South Korea's largest trading partner in Europe, with around 850 South Korean companies operating in Germany. The summit aims to advance these ties in a strategic direction, reflecting the growing importance of collaboration between the two nations.
