South Korea's foreign tourist arrivals are projected to surpass last year's record, boosting the economy.
In a remarkable turn of events, South Korea is on track to achieve a record number of foreign tourist arrivals this year. According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, approximately 18.91 million foreign visitors have arrived in the country as of late October, surpassing the previous record of 18.94 million set in 2022.
The ministry anticipates that if the current trend continues, the total number of arrivals could exceed 20 million by mid-November. This surge in tourism is expected to significantly contribute to the South Korean economy, particularly in sectors such as shopping, accommodation, and wellness services, with foreign visitors' spending increasing by 47.7% compared to the previous year.
Chae Hwi-young, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, expressed optimism regarding the early record, stating that it brings the government's year-end target of 23 million foreign visitors within reach. The growth in tourist numbers is not limited to Seoul, as more visitors are entering through regional airports and exploring areas beyond the capital.
The rising popularity of South Korean culture, coupled with innovations in the tourism industry and warm hospitality towards foreign visitors, has been credited for this impressive increase. The government aims to not only expand visitor numbers but also enhance the overall quality of the tourism experience in South Korea.
