The Bank of Korea's governor has indicated a hawkish monetary policy stance.
On October 23, 2026, Bank of Korea (BOK) Governor Shin Hyun-song emphasized a hawkish approach to monetary policy during a parliamentary audit. He noted that the bank would adjust its policies in anticipation of a future characterized by higher economic growth and interest rates.
Shin's comments came in response to concerns about the challenges of returning to ultra-low interest rates. He stated, "We will implement policies effectively in preparation for the prospect of a future environment characterized by high growth and high interest rates."
The BOK has recently adopted a more hawkish stance due to rising inflation and solid economic growth. The central bank raised the benchmark interest rate to 3 percent in July and August, marking a significant shift in its monetary policy approach.
During the latest rate-setting meeting, the BOK held the rate steady but clarified that this was a pause rather than a shift from its tightening cycle. The bank cited inflationary pressures and an unexpected economic recovery as key factors influencing its decisions.
Looking ahead, Shin projected that the South Korean economy could grow by over 3 percent this year and next, driven by robust exports, particularly in the artificial intelligence sector.
