The Bank of Korea's chief highlights the challenge of controlling inflation amidst the AI investment surge and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The chief of the Bank of Korea (BOK), Shin Hyun-song, emphasized the critical need to manage inflation during a session at the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Group meetings in Bangkok. He pointed out that the simultaneous rise of artificial intelligence investments and the prolonged conflict in the Middle East are contributing to increased consumer prices.

Shin noted that South Korea is uniquely positioned at the crossroads of these two significant global trends. While the AI sector is driving economic growth, it is also counterbalanced by the adverse effects of geopolitical instability. He remarked, "In terms of inflation, they are actually combining to raise inflation," indicating the complexities faced by the central bank.

The ongoing AI boom has notably benefited South Korea's semiconductor industry, with major players like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix reporting record profits. However, Shin expressed concerns that the economic benefits are not evenly distributed, leading to a K-shaped economy where lower-income groups are disproportionately affected by rising prices.

To address these inflationary pressures, the BOK has implemented a series of interest rate hikes, raising the benchmark rate to 3 percent. Shin reiterated the central bank's commitment to controlling inflation, stating, "Getting monetary policy right is absolutely key." The BOK is set to hold its next rate-setting meeting soon, as it continues to navigate these challenging economic conditions.
