The Bank of Korea anticipates significant growth in its foreign asset returns, reaching nearly 17 trillion won by 2025.
The Bank of Korea (BOK) has announced that it expects its returns on foreign assets to approach 17 trillion won (approximately $12.5 billion) by the year 2025. This projection reflects a notable increase in the central bank's investment performance, driven by favorable market conditions.
According to data released by the BOK, the returns on foreign assets surged to 16.9 trillion won in the previous year, marking a 32% increase from the prior year. The bank attributes this growth to a weaker South Korean won against the US dollar and a rally in global stock markets.
Historically, the returns on foreign assets fluctuated, with figures around 8 trillion won annually from 2016 to 2018, peaking at 13.8 trillion won in 2021 before experiencing a decline to 3.9 trillion won in 2022. However, the trend has reversed, with returns rebounding to 4.9 trillion won in 2023 and further increasing to 12.8 trillion won in 2024.
These developments indicate a positive outlook for the Bank of Korea's foreign investments, suggesting that the central bank is effectively navigating the complexities of international finance amid changing economic conditions.
